That Which Jesus First Cannot Accept
Jesus First
has listened carefully to the rhetoric bouncing around the
Missouri Synod these days, and we are listing below some of
the ideas and practices that we find objectionable and
unacceptable for Christian brothers and sisters who live
together under the cross of Christ:
Calls for
division of the Synod
We understand that there is a
lack of conformity within the Synod. But we hold that we
have great unity in doctrine. We see that calls for
division, even if that division never occurs, will only
result in ridicule by friends and critics of The Lutheran
Church - Missouri Synod.
Calls for
rigid conformity
From its beginning, the LCMS has
affirmed the significance and importance of the local
congregation doing in their area and community that which
will most effectively serve the proclamation of the Gospel.
Abuse of
the Synodical President
Jesus First remained silent when
untruths, non-truths, or twisted truths were spoken or
written about the holder of the President’s office. We are
determined in this administration that those who initiate or
repeat these offenses shall be held accountable for their
words.
A
reduction of emphasis on Synod’s evangelism commitments
Synod endorsed the Ablaze!
and Fan into Flame initiatives—two expressions of our
earnest desire to win for eternity the souls of many.
An
unbiblical rejection of the role of women
The Synod has very carefully
reviewed the role of women in the church and in convention
endorsed their appropriate leadership roles. Women have
brought many blessings to the LCMS. We will resist any
effort to reduce the ministry women bring to the church.
An effort
to stymie the creativity and versatility of congregations in
worship
We do understand that there are
appropriate expectations of what will take place in a
service of Lutheran worship. As congregations understand and
honor those expectations, congregations can and should use
the variety of gifts that are available to them without
undue criticism or judgment from others.
Failure
to continue engaging in dialogue with our Lutheran brothers
and sisters
We do understand that these are
tenuous and fragile times within the greater Lutheran
community. It is all the more important that we in good
faith initiate and respond to invitations that will allow us
to receive their witness and to give our witness.
A
reluctant or hesitant participation in working with our
Lutheran Brothers and sisters in the matter of world relief
and human care
The needs are too demanding. The
resources are too limited. The opportunities are so
plentiful. We understand the need to proceed with care, but
proceed we must.
A failure
to engage in fraternal conversations with the greater
Christian community
The crisis facing Christianity in
the face of other non-Christian world religions demands a
united front. It would be tragic if our voice was missing
and our witness silenced.
